Party honours Liz as Britain’s top lockdown campaigner

-

Perth campaigner Liz Barrett has been added to the Liberal Democrat Community Champions Hall of Fame for her work to help both the most vulnerable and carers in the city during the coronavirus crisis.

Liz was recognised as the most inspiring urban activist across the UK.

Since lockdown began Liz has been volunteering three times a week at Perth Foodbank, topping up food boxes, phoning scores of local residents and supporting them with shopping and IT.

She worked with local nurses to develop the button band to improve fit and comfort of PPE face masks with elastic.

She then organised donations of buttons and fabric, managed a team of over 30 volunteers to produce more than 1400 button bands and distributed them to NHS staff and care workers.

Liz also put her skills into action making over 50 facemasks and sewing scrubs bags, as well as knitting blankets and clothes for premature babies.

“I am thrilled to have been chosen as a winner,” Liz explained to the Perthshire Advertiser this week.

“But I really feel so lucky to be able to help in these difficult times.

“I want to thank everyone who has stayed at home when asked and everyone else who has done their bit. They are all far more deserving than me.

“It has been wonderful to be a part of a truly national show of civic engagement and social support.

“Perth is a fantastic community and I am so proud to have worked with the Liberal Democrats to help out.”
