Takeaway service helped over 100

- MELANIE BONN

A Chinese takeaway in Perth has wound up its free meal delivery service which has brought sunshine to over 100 housebound elderly people during 11 weeks of lockdown.

Peter Chan, boss at China China whose own mum has been unable to have visitors through the pandemic - worked to send complete celebration meals round to old folks who were nominated for a treat.

The takeaway on St Leonard’s Bridge in Craigie, teamed up with Adele Frampton from the Coronavirus in Perthshire Support Group on Facebook and began the ‘Takeaway for the Elderly at Home’ project in March.

The workers kept the fryers working, carrier bags filled and wheels turning while maintaining a safe distance for the city’s most vulnerable people.

Showing team spirit and working hard has been 16-year-old trainee Ciaran Cushnie, who was a big help on the counter getting the orders made up and out.

Adele on the Facebook page has been the logistics heroine behind taking nominations and getting orders safely to people who had to celebrate birthday or anniversary all alone.

Pete Chan praised her for “brilliant planning” and being the brains behind the delivery logistics.

He said: “Since March, we have fed over 100 elderly folks in their own homes, that have been self isolating/shielding.

“Adele has been fantastic coordinating all the specially requested dates with deliveries and on Monday night this week, we thought we’d make the last delivery very special.

“The final order for this wee initiative went to Mr and Mrs Johnston from the Oakbank area, who were celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary on June 22.

“They were nominated by their daughter Mandy, who suggested a chicken curry and a meal of sweet and sour chicken would definitely cheer them up whilst enduring lockdown.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that nominated the folks who you care about.

“Without your input, we really couldn’t have put this project to its full use.

“Also, I’d like to thank our own delivery drivers, Scott and Ian, who both don’t just deliver the food safely, but didn’t accept any payment for making these complimentary meal deliveries.

“This was indeed a community effort.” After the routine of nightly deliveries came to an end local people sent messages of gratitude for the goodwill gesture by China China.

Rowena Ross wrote: “Wonderful people. Thank you.”

Carol Jackson commented: “Well done all.

“Many thanks from my aunt who got a delivery early on. Loved it. Heartfelt thanks to all concerned.”

Shannon Henderson said: “Thanks for delivering a free meal to my granny tonight.

“It is her 81st birthday and unfortunately as we can’t be together, I nominated her for one of your meals and this has cheered her right up.”
