Body found at island golf club

- ROBBIE CHALMERS

The body of a 48-year-old man was found at a Perth golf club this week following an extensive overnight police search operation.

Emergency services swooped on Moncrieffe Island at around 3.40am on Tuesday morning after police received a call of concern for an individual at the King James VI Golf Club.

Officers guarded the railway bridge leading to Moncrieffe Island during the search but an eyewitness said there was no sign of an ambulance or search and rescue at that point.

Witnesses said a large group of youths had been on the island and gathered around the Tay Street area during the night but said it was unclear if the two incidents are connected.

Another witness said they saw a young male being led down from the railway bridge at around 5am as the search was still under way.

Police Scotland later confirmed the body of a 48-year-old man was found.

A forensics specialist attended the scene before an eyewitness reported seeing a body being taken across the railway bridge by funeral directors just before 10am and put into a private ambulance.

Officers also removed a black bin liner of items from the island which they placed in the back of a police car.

The authorities are not treating the death as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

A spokesperson for the police said: “Around 3.40am on Tuesday, July 7 police received a concern for person call and attended at a golf club in Tay Street, Perth.

“Officers attended and the body of a 48-year-old man was found.
