Kinnoull moving in the right direction Boss welcomes local derby as he bolsters squad

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Kinnoull manager Alan Cameron reckons it is too early for favourites to be named for the East of Scotland League Conference B crown.

The Tulloch Park side performed impressively in their first season in the new set-up last term and are now waiting for the green light for the 2020/21 campaign to start.

Boss Cameron has decided against a return to training up until this point as he awaits clarity on plans moving forward following the coronavirus outbreak.

But when competitive football does begin he will ensure his players are set for league duty, which will see the Perthshire derby with Luncarty reignited again.

“There are going to be tough games against the likes of Newburgh and there are a couple of other teams close-by in Fife,” Cameron explained to the PA. “It’s going to be interesting.

“Luncarty have a great squad, loads of experience and new management keen to get going.

“I think they will do really well and will play decent football.

“The derbies will be the usual blood, guts and thunder when it comes to it.”

Kinnoull finished in third position last season when action was curtailed due to the pandemic.

“We had games in hand and I don’t know where we would’ve ended up last season” said Cameron. “The guys had done brilliantly to get to where they were.

“We were maybe a little low on numbers, hence why I’ve brought in a few. We’ll be looking to consolidate again and do what we did the season past.

“If you’d told us we would be up there challenging, we would’ve bitten your hand off. We maybe had a surprise element about us.

“There are a lot of good sides in both conferences. Some people are putting down favourites, but I find it hard to say. Any team in that league can beat you.

“It’s going to be entertaining, if and when we do get back up and running.”

Cameron has moved quickly to welcome a number of new signings, including Andrew Mackenzie, Darren Gray and Darren Spence.

“I’m pleased with what I’ve got,” he said this week. “I’m probably looking for one or two more but that is being a little greedy.

“Darren Spence has played with the juniors at Scone and did quite well. We have quite a young squad so Andrew Mackenzie is an experienced head.

“And Darren Gray has been here and worked with us before.

“He decided he wanted to come back for a different challenge in the East of Scotland League.

“He can unlock a defence against stuffy opposition. He has the final pass and bit of trickery.

“The new lads who have come on board will add to the squad and challenge the guys who have all re-signed.

“It’s always a good sign when you get players re-signing because they are enjoying what is going on.”
