Davidson tipped to be hit by his old pals at The Den

Millwall backroom staff will be keeping a close eye on St Johnstone.

Not just to follow the development of their loan players Danny McNamara and Isaac Olaofe, but to also take an interest in Callum Davidson’s first steps in management.

Davidson spent a successful spell as assistant to Gary Rowett at The Den and left a lasting impression before moving to take up the reins of the Perth club in June.

Head of coaching at Millwall Kenny Brown witnessed first-hand a number of qualities which he believes will make the former Scotland international a success story as a No1.

“Straightaway Gary [Rowett] and Callum hit the ground running,” Brown explained to the PA.“I know the players really enjoyed working with them.

“They were very thorough, professional in their mannerisms and bounced off each other well. They gained respect straightaway.

“It was no coincidence that the team went on to do really well. It was a shock for people that Callum left, but you can understand.

“It’s his club and he has a strong affection for St Johnstone. He went with everyone’s best wishes because he did really well at Millwall.”

Davidson, who was previously assistant at McDiarmid Park before moving to become No2 at Stoke City, has also been involved with coaching the Scotland national team.

Brown added:“You’ll find coaches who can only ever be a No2 and sometimes only ever want to be a No2, which is fine.

“But there is always an inclination to be a number one. Has it come around quicker than he expected? Maybe.

“But what a great opportunity for him.

“What he has learnt working at big clubs in the Championship, I’m sure he will do well.

“We all want him to succeed because he’s a good football person.

“He knows the game inside out and earned a lot of respect.”

For Brown personally, this is not the first time he has ties to St Johnstone.

He said:“It’s a little ironic because I’m good friends with Steve Lomas.

“St Johnstone was a club we used to go up and play in pre-season when I was at West Ham.

“That was as far as I knew about St Johnstone.

“But when Lomas went up there, I had one eye on him and was seeing how he was doing.”
