Gallery dream is reality

New art showcase

- MELANIE BONN

Perthshire artist Andrew Hunter had a busy lockdown preparing the opening of his new homebased gallery.

Set in a wild garden in Enochdhu, near Kirkmichael, the Silver Hunter Contemporary Gallery features a collection of Andrew’s paintings, prints and cards as well the work of ceramicist Jenny Charles and jewellery maker Kate West.

Andrew spent his working life in graphic design and took up painting after retirement.

As a member of Perthshire Open Studios he has been welcoming visitors to his studio for many years.

Opening his own gallery was, he admitted, a big leap but a natural next step.

Andrew has found the planning, development and opening of his new gallery enjoyable and satisfying.

Starting a new business venture is challenging at any time and planning to launch in 2020 has been further complicated by the national lockdown.

He overcame what might have ordinarily been simple tasks such as organising signs and promotional leaflets.

Work on display currently includes a collection of hand-painted jewellery pieces created by Kate West, whose work is inspired by hand by fossils and shells, and Jenny Charles’ ceramics, principally created using earthenware with a vibrant blue glaze.

Andrew’s work is also featured and available on the newly launched Perthshire Artisans website.

The new gallery has places to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee in the garden if the gallery is busy.

It is open 10am-4pm daily (apart from Wednesdays) and can be contacted on 07899877439.
