Fountain takes on Britain’s best bars

- MELanIE Bonn

The Fountain Bar in Aberfeldy has been recognised for the service it gave to the local community during the coronavirus lockdown.

The pub in the town square has been nominated in the Great British Pub Awards in the Pub Heroes 2020 category.

If it wins the prize is £10,000 and the pub’s owner has pledged the local community would benefit.

The Fountain was the starting point for #Feldyroo, a meals delivery network which helped elderly residents who could not go out to shop or be visited by relatives.

Owner Gavin Price initially used the pub kitchen to turn out free hot dinners for older town residents.

It put out 9242 servings between March and July and brought companionship through food to the isolated elderly.

The service grew too big for The Fountain to do alone and other businesses came on board.

Now the bar is shortlisted alongside five other pubs throughout the UK for the Pub Heroes award. It will be decided by public vote and people have until tomorrow.

Mr Price, a former professional footballer and now manager of Elgin FC, said: “It is recognition for the fantastic community spirit shown by not just by The Fountain but for everyone involved in the Feldyroo project and the Aberfeldy community as a whole.

“There is a £10,000 prize up for grabs. In reality this is would be an award for Feldyroo and our community. Therefore we would look to put the prize money towards something to benefit our fantastic community.

“Hopefully everyone will support us and get their votes in.”

Voting is at www.surveymonkey. co.uk/r/GBPA-Greene-King.
