Personal trainer is ‘buzzing’ to be back

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

A personal trainer has said the Perthshire fitness industry is “buzzing” to be back next week.

It was confirmed last week that gyms across Scotland could reopen on Monday, August 31 as the country continues to ease out of lockdown.

For those who rely on gyms and other fitness facilities for their income, it was a huge relief after months of uncertainty.

Among those was Tammy Fleucher, who is also looking forward to taking on a new challenge after the gym she formerly managed closed.

Ahead of Monday’s reopening, Tammy told the PA: “We’re absolutely buzzing.

“It’s been a long time coming and I actually thought, with all the outbreaks, that Nicola Sturgeon wouldn’t bring the opening forward, but it was great.

“Things will be strange and different but for most gyms safety and hygiene was always a priority.

“It’s exciting to get people back in and improve their health and wellbeing, which is so important.

“People think gyms are just about getting fit but they don’t realise the social aspect of it.

“Scotland has such an issue with obesity as well so it’s good to get people back in.”

Tammy was previously managing at the Fit4less gym on Canal Street, which has closed down.

She will now be working out of the Omega

MMA gym at Tayview Industrial Estate, which has plans to become a community gym with classes and open gym space, as well as its work with MMA fighters.

Tammy has also turned her personal training business into a community interest company (CIC).

Similar to non-profit organisations, CICs are businesses designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for the public good.

Tammy will focus on youth groups, families and mental health, as well as those with disabilities which includes the popular inclusive group that previously ran out of Fit4Less and will now go to Omega.

She will team up with the likes of Jeanfield and Scotland All Strong to deliver on these goals, as well as working out of Omega.

And although she fought hard to save the Fit4Less facility, Tammy reckons its closure has opened up new doors for her.

She said: “I think that was the kick up the backside I needed.

“Sometimes you need a wee push that forces you to do what you want to do.

“It was sad Fit4less closed but this is new and exciting.

“I’ve always loved community work. This is what I want and this is what I have always wanted to do.”
