Linda seals win with a birdie
The ladies’handicap showdown at King James VI Golf Club followed a similar theme to the week prior’s finals day - a wonderful spectacle played in the right manner.
It was Linda Gray who was crowned winner after playing out a closely-fought match against Lesley Findlay on Saturday past.
A terrific birdie putt closed out the tie and was further evidence of the high standard of golf that had been on show.
This is a promising time for ladies’golf at the Island and the club has recently signed up to the Women in Golf Charter, which supports initiatives to promote the game.
Led by long-time club member and former club champion Moira Lumby with the support of club members, a second‘Get into Golf’series of lessons for ladies has started at the course.
There are two improvers and a beginners group enjoying coaching with local professional Wallace Booth.
Wallace has a vast amount of experience in the game and continues to compete in tournaments across the country and abroad.
In addition to these coaching sessions on Sunday afternoons, ladies can also go out on the course with club members on Wednesdays at 6.30pm.
Annelie Graf, one of the newest beginners at the Get into Golf coaching, said:“Everyone was lovely and good company, and it all felt very relaxed.
“It is an ideal set up and I’m really glad I signed up.”
Almost all of the first‘Get into Golf’group have signed up to join the club, enjoying a friendly welcome from King James VI members in recent weeks.
Gillian Crawford, who works at Aviva in Perth, said:“What hit me was the friendliness of the club - King James really makes you feel welcome.
“I only really started playing golf properly since golf clubs were allowed to open again.
“The help I’ve had from the lady members is fantastic.
“I’m feeling a lot more confident and now playing with new friends I’ve met at the club since joining.”
