Store boosts community larders

-

A Perth supermarket has been praised for its help in keeping nine give-and-take community larders stocked.

The ASDA on Dunkeld Road has doubled the amount of food it gives to the boxes in Muirton and North Muirton, which are run by the Saints in the Community Trust and Councillor Peter Barrett.

Cllr Barrett said: “This month’s donation of food by ASDA is just tremendous, two big trolleys brimming with tinned goods and other staples. I want to thank them for their generosity, it’s just great.”

Anna Jellye, ASDA’s Community Life colleague, said:“Peter highlighted that the level of need for food support in our local area was outstripping demand so we are really glad to be able to help the community where we are based.”

Cllr Barrett added:“With the Give and Take boxes people give food when they can and can take it when they need it. It’s there for emergencies and to prevent food poverty.

“I want to thank the community for looking out for, and after, their neighbours. I would appeal for people to keep supporting the boxes whenever they can. The boxes are one of the vital local community food initiatives in the area.”

The Lib Dem councillor also made an appeal for local residents to support the Muirton Community Foodshare hub at 111 Dunkeld Road.

Cllr Barrett said: “The Muirton Community Food Share is another fantastic initiative which aims to cut food waste, prevent food going to landfill and generating greenhouse gases, as well as providing free and cheap food locally.

“I’ve been volunteering there since it opened and know just how important it is to local people. It helps save the planet too.”

The Food Share shop is open on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11am to 1.30pm.

Cllr Barrett said:“We are looking for more volunteers to help run the shop and drivers help collect food supplies from Letham4all.

“The volunteers are a great bunch and we have some good craic in the shop.”

Anyone interested in helping out can pop into the shop for a chat or email secretary@ letham4all.org.uk or call Cllr Barrett on 07789617551.
