Fears vehicles aren’t being wiped between hires

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

Fears have been raised that some taxi drivers in Perth and Kinross are putting lives at risk by shunning coronavirus guidance to wipe down their vehicle after every journey.

Roseanna Cunningham MSP has expressed concerns after it was reported by a member of the public.

And one resident who spoke to the PA said they had witnessed drivers pick up new hires without any attempt to clean their vehicle.

He also said he had seen taxi drivers standing together while not social distancing in the street.

Ms Cunningham has now written to the council asking it to investigate as the body which hands out taxi licences.

She said: “It is quite understandable for people to be concerned if they suspect that private hire taxis are not being wiped down between hires as they should.

“I have brought the issues raised to the attention of council officials and I am sure that they will be looking into the matter.

“I know that most drivers will be doing their best and it is only too

human to make mistakes, but I urge all taxi drivers to ensure that they are following all of the guidance they have received at all times.

“Keeping to these rules is about keeping us all safe - drivers and passengers alike.”

Andy Lothian, who runs Ace Taxis in the city, told the PA all his drivers are issued with guidance, as well as cleaning materials.

And he said he was relying on them showing“common sense”to make sure they were cleaning down their cabs.

He added:“I have emphasised the point that they need to wear their masks and clean their cars.

“I want to make sure my guys are ok. They don’t know who is getting in the back of their cab.

“You can’t legislate for stupidity. I‘ve got to trust them. I certainly hope the drivers are keeping their car clean because I’ve spent a lot of money.

“I hope my drivers are on top of it. There are no excuses.”

A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Councl said all taxi drivers and operators are expected to follow national guidance on COVID-19.
