Spate of car crime in Perth prompts advice

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

Drivers in Perth and Kinross are being told to guard against vehicle crime after a spate of incidents on one night last week.

A number of break-ins were recorded on the evening of Thursday, August 27 in Perth.

A red transit van was broken into whilst parked on South William Street, as was a red VW Caddy which had a distinctive green coloured army bag containing a minefield perimeter kit taken from within.

Two further vehicles were targeted in the library car park in New Row, Perth when a white Vauxhall Mokka and grey Renault Clio were broken into.

Police are now issuing advice on how to keep a vehicle secure, as well as appealing for information on the crimes.

Advice includes marking valuable in the vehicle like Sat Nav systems, fitting a car alarm, using locking wheel nuts and keeping your car off the street if possible by using a garage or drive if you have one.

Drivers are reminded to lock their vehicle, never leave the key in the ignition and never leave their car unattended to defrost windows in winter, as many thieves actively target this and an insurance claim could be affected.

Try and avoid parking in isolated areas and look for car parks with the Park Mark sign. Lock all items out of sight and leave the glove box empty and open.

Perth and Kinross area commander CI Graham Binnie said:“[This is] particularly pertinent as we transition from summer to autumn and face darker evenings which provides increased opportunity for criminals to operate.”

Anyone with information on the break ins should contact Tayside Division on 101. Alternatively, information can be passed on anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
