Inspectors uncovered “significant issues” with how child protection concerns were reported and recorded at Perth College UHI Nursery during an unannounced visit earlier this year.
According to a report published last week the Care Inspectorate identified the issues back in February and instructed managers to address them within two weeks of the inspection.
The report said inspectors found children were “happy and settled,” that staff were “caring [and] very responsive to the children” and the staff team and deputy manager “were passionate and committed to their roles”.
But the report went on: “Robust quality assurance processes were not in place to monitor the standard of practice within the service. These must be developed and implemented effectively by the manager to ensure that systems and processes are audited, areas for improvement are identified and outcomes for children are improved.”
And the report added: “We found that staff had a good awareness and understanding of their role in protecting and safeguarding children.
“However, we identified significant issues with the reporting and recording of child protection concerns by the child protection officer. The senior management team took action to address this during the inspection.”
A Perth College UHI spokesperson said: “This was a largely positive report overall, endorsing the quality of our staff, and we are pleased that this highlighted that the children in our care were happy and settled at nursery and engaged in their play and learning.
“It was recognised staff had developed strong, positive attachments with children, and were very responsive to them, promoting choice and following their cues and interests.
“We will work with staff and parents to address the recommendations, as well as building on strengths noted in the report to ensure our nursery children continue to receive the best possible experience during their time with us.”
