Artist’s solo exhibition

- MELANIE BONN

Alyth-based landscape artist Jonathan Mitchell is being honoured with a new solo exhibition.

Eduardo Alessandro Studios in Broughty Ferry will host a high profile‘30 Years’exhibition marking the progress of Jonathan’s practice as an artist since graduating from the Dundee’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art 30 years ago.

The exhibition opens on Saturday, September 12 and runs until the 26th.

It features 30 of Jonathan’s new paintings inspired by the Scottish landscape and will be the first major exhibition to take place at Eduardo Alessandro Studios following the Scottish lockdown restrictions which were implemented in March.

Jonathan made his television debut in 2018 competing in an early heat of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year where he won the‘wildcard’ selection with an oil painting of The Vital Spark, the jaunty tugboat made famous by the popular Scottish TV series Para Handy.

This will be Jonathan’s first major exhibition since competing in the show two years ago.

Throughout these past three decades, Jonathan has developed a distinctive technique which can be characterised as‘painterly realism’, which equally conveys the essence and detail of the subject.

Jonathan said of his work:“I try to evoke a sense of place and to communicate to the viewer what it felt like to be there; how cold or warm it was, how it felt underfoot and even what smells and sounds were there. And of course, light – how the Scottish landscape looks when bathed in sunlight”.

Gallery owner, Sandro Paladini said:“It’s been a privilege to have witnessed Jonathan’s development as an artist over the last 30 years.

“He has never painted better and you sense an enjoyment in his work born from his genuine, honest relationship with the Scottish landscape.

“It’s rare to see this level of empathy between artist and subject.”

There is no denying the severe impact which COVID-19 has had on the arts, with many exhibitions and events being cancelled or postponed, or featuring online only throughout the pandemic.

With many galleries reopening and looking to encourage attendance, Jonathan’s exhibition at Eduardo Alessandro Studios is an attractive and tempting proposition for art lovers.

‘30Years, 30 Paintings’is a free access exhibition, open Monday-Saturday, 9.30am-5pm and at other times by appointment.

The exhibition can also be viewed on the gallery’s website from Wednesday, September 9 at www. eastudios.com
