Lady legend is at heart of new book

Author Mark unlocks secrets of mysterious Lawers

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

A new book has been released that explores one of Perthshire’s greatest legends.

The Lady of Lawers was a soothsayer who lived in the old village of Lawers in the 17th century.

The old hamlet on the banks of Loch Tay, as opposed to the current settlement, is now abandoned and author Mark Bridgeman has used it as the setting for his latest book - ‘The Lost Village of Lawers’.

In it he looks back on the history of the site and looks to answer questions about the Lady of Lawers.

Mary Campbell, daughter of Sir James Campbell, 4th of Lawers, became known as the Lady of Lawers after making a number of prophecies, many of which came true.

In his book, Mark hopes to open up “almost 1000 years of surprising human history,” by intertwining the story of Lawers with the famous clairvoyant.

He said: “The abandoned village of Lawers is a very mysterious and enigmatic place.

“Any visitor leaves the site wondering exactly what happened here. While many people have asked the questions, no one has really found the answers.

“I’m very excited about this book. It’s both the story of the old village, and an informative guidebook.

“I wanted to produce something that would fit in your pocket, making a handy guide to the site, should you want to go there.

“Lawers is one of those mysterious places that, despite being well known locally, surprisingly few people have actually visited – or even know how to get there.”

Mark will also look into the three remaining prophecies from the Lady of Lawers which remain unfulfilled - so far.

He explained: “I’ve unearthed some very surprising evidence as well as revealed possible answers to the unsolved riddle of The Lady’s remaining three prophecies.

“For anyone who loves history, myth and a good old Celtic legend, I think you will find it fascinating.”

The Lost Village of Lawers is available now from The Watermill Bookshop, Aberfeldy, visitor attractions in Highland Perthshire, and amazon.co.uk

Mark is also the author of ‘The River Runs Red’, ‘Blood Beneath Ben Nevis’ and ‘Surviving In The Shadows’.
