The Blairgowrie Golf Club has announced that Sir William Macpherson of Cluny has been awarded honorary membership.
Retired High Court judge Sir William (94), who handled the milestone Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, first golfed at the Perthshire club at the age of 11 and previously enjoyed life member status.
Presenting Sir William with his certificate at his Perthshire home, club captain James Macfarlane said: “Sir William has been a great supporter of The Blairgowrie Golf Club, not just in terms of his many years of membership, but he and his family have been benefactors of the club through much of its history.
“This was reflected a few years ago in the erection and naming in his honour of an iconic bridge over the burn at Rosemount’s signature hole, the 17th.
“Following a decision made at the recent annual general meeting, I am delighted to have been able to confirm to Sir William the esteem in which he is held by the members of The Blairgowrie Golf Club.”
Sir William, who is chief of the Clan Macpherson, joins an illustrious group of honorary members of the Perthshire club, including Glenn Campbell, Bradley Neil, Tom Watson, former secretary John Simpson, Fiona Anderson, Gary Player and the late Peter Alliss, who co-designed The Lansdowne course.
