Flying startfor Saints podcast

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

The creators of a new St Johnstone podcast have been blown away by the response to its first episode.

Supporters Sam Miller and Danny Williams kicked-off the informative and lighthearted online offering earlier this week.

‘Dogger Saints: Unofficial St Johnstone podcast’ was the brainchild of a group of fans who, in normal times, meet post-match at the Railway Staff Club on Feus Road to pour over the highs and lows of the Perth club.

Joining Sam and Danny for the inaugural episode was former player and favourite Kieran McAnespie, now manager of Cumbernauld United.

“I listen to a fair amount of Scottish football podcasts and most clubs have got one - but for Saints, there was a gap in the market,” said Sam, who was grateful for the help of his wife Lynne, a presenter and DJ.

“We had thought about it for a while and, as soon as we got to the cup final, it was time to get on board.

“We started planning on Wednesday of last week, had it fully recorded on Sunday and then out to the public on Monday.

“I think I spent 18 hours solid on it to try and get it out there. With a podcast, the information needs to be relevant to that time.

“Having my wife edit it down within an inch of its life and make it sound more professional certainly helped.”

The hour-long episode touched on a range of subjects and quickly earned the praise of fellow Perth supporters.

“The feel-good factor around the club is pretty high at the moment,” said Sam. “We’re trying to give something else to the fans.

“We have been blown away by the response. It’s had a fair amount of streams already and we’ve only had positive comments.

“It’s pretty light-hearted stuff, not going too in-depth on statistics and analysis. It’s two Saints fans having a bit of banter.

“I got a couple of texts from people saying they had been out for a morning walk for an hour and had stuck on the podcast.

“It was going to just be a wee hobby but it sounded much better than we thought it was going to. I think we’ll give it a lot more attention.”

Another star guest has already been lined-up for this Sunday’s recording.

“Hopefully this week’s episode doesn’t take 18 hours because it’s my wife’s birthday,” Sam smiled.

“Scottish football is an absolute circus and gold mine for entertainment and content. We’ll have plenty to talk about.”

The podcast is available on Spotify.
