SNP candidate selected for by-election after sad death of Councillor Anderson

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

The SNP has selected its candidate to stand in the Almond and Earn by-election.

Michelle Frampton will look to retain the seat for the Nationalists on March 25.

The by-election was called after the sad death of SNP incumbent Henry Anderson in December from COVID-19.

Ms Frampton said:“The sad passing of Cllr Henry Anderson was felt by the whole community across the ward and it would be a real privilege to follow in Henry’s footsteps.

“I have worked in a number of sectors, including within social care and the charity sector, helping children with sight and hearing impairments and I believe that Almond and Earn needs a councillor with a compassionate and caring nature.

“I was born and raised in Perthshire and I have a keen grasp of the issues which impact residents across Almond and Earn.

“Whether that be the issues caused by the closure of the GP surgery in Bridge of Earn, problems with flooding across the ward, the impact of bus routes being cut or the need for traffic calming measures in Methven - I will stand up for all residents across Almond and Earn.”

Meanwhile, the Scottish Greens will not contest the seat after the likely candidate said he would not put his name forward “out of respect for the late Cllr Henry Anderson”.

Paul Vallot, who is also a Scottish Green list candidate at the upcoming Scottish election, said the decision was made early in the process.

Mr Vallot, who lives in Forgandenny, said he became friends with Cllr Anderson as a member of the community council.

He added:“When he was taken from us we lost a great servant to the people of Almond and Earn.

“For this reason, I said from the moment I heard that I would not stand in his place, as a mark of my respect for him and his legacy.”
