WORKING FOR YOU IN PERTHSHIRE Spotlight on CEO of Background Support

-

Paul Ellis, founder and CEO of Background Support, is based in Blairgowrie.

Background Support was founded in 2019, and grew out of a previous company that Paul led, which provided project management, change management and morale improvement for various public and private sector organisations.

Background Support has incorporated those services of managing change, and has grown to provide process creation, and process improvement services for other companies.

Paul says he could see that poor processes were costing businesses time, leading to a loss of revenue. The simple lack of standard operating procedures (SOP), or regularly reviewed SOPs was resulting in the reduced success of regular occurrences – meaning sales were being lost, business expectations were unmet, and there was no methodology of continuous process improvement to maintain business needs.

What are some symptoms that processes are starting to crumble, or fail, in a business? Are emails and voicemails overflowing? Are employees not performing their jobs in the way you need them to -which could be because they don’t understand something, or something needs clarification? Is there repetition or duplication of tasks across the workforce? Are resources – money, time, or labour - being wasted? And are there high levels of stress?

Background Support offers business process management services. Sounds like a grandiose, rather off-putting term, but essentially, it is just about revising, improving (if needs be), and documenting what a business does.

The team at Background Support understands the relentless nature of business operations and the relentless forces of change – internally and externally. They review the business processes that show increasing execution time, which could be due to improper design, business growth, or input over many years from many different people, and make tiny improvements which can have a huge effect throughout the rest of the company.

Paul says a lot of staff, from the CEO down, feel overwhelmed with their workload and the targets that they need to meet.

Background Support will have a look at processes - everything from onboarding clients or staff - through to how businesses go about their daily tasks.

It could be assistance with managing the inbox, or perhaps a business wants to increase its visibility.

Paul said: “So perhaps your inbox is overstuffed, day-to-day operations aren’t going the way you want them to go, or you’re just under pressure.

“Life is busy, and things happen which can disrupt your plans – just think about what has happened in the last 12 months. We can help to organise your business systems so that you can scale your business, or just make your day run smoothly.

“Background Support - as the name suggests, we like to work in the background to enable others to use their time in the most effective manner. We give business owners and managers a 25th hour in their day.”
