ABERTAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
continues on Wednesday, March 10 when Dr Dan Potter will be speaking on ‘Ancient Egypt across Scotland: The National Museums Scotland Collections Review’, with a live Q&A taking place at 7pm.
Over 2019-20, National Museums Scotland worked with museums across Scotland to identify ancient Egyptian collections.
The resulting review identified around 14,000 objects in 25 Scottish institutions, spread across 50 sites, making this the largest survey of its kind ever completed for Scotland. The review gathers details about museums, donors, excavations, objects and sites providing a wealth of detail for interested readers and researchers alike.
This lecture will share some of the fascinating untold stories that have been highlighted by the review, connecting museums across the country with each other and with the work of archaeologists, Scottish society and even a relative of Robert Burns.
From the Borders to Orkney, and from delicate amulets to monumental blocks of carved stone, join this online lecture to hear about ancient Egypt across Scotland.
Dr Dan Potter is the assistant curator for ancient Mediterranean collections at National Museums Scotland. In 2020 he completed the museum’s review the ancient Egyptian collections in Scotland.
He has also curated the 2019-21 National Museums Scotland touring exhibition Discovering Ancient Egypt.
He has worked for National Museums Scotland since 2016 and previously worked at the Garstang Museum of Archaeology in Liverpool. Dan’s research interests include the history of Egyptology, John Garstang’s production of archaeological facsimiles, and the representation of ancient Egypt in comics.
