The League Cup is already in the trophy cabinet.

Now defender Liam Gordon has stressed there is no reason why St Johnstone cannot dream of adding another.

Saints embark on their Scottish Cup adventure this weekend with a third round trip to local rivals Dundee.

“It’s an exciting one and one I wish all the fans could go to,”Gordon said.

“Being from Perth, I know the magnitude of the game as do the rest of the players. We know how much it means to everyone.

“We’re playing well, are in good form and are a good team. We fancy ourselves against anyone.

“If you don’t fancy yourselves for the cup, I don’t think you should take part in it. You go into every cup wanting to win it.

“We want to get as far as we can but we’re solely focused on Dundee and getting through to the next round.

“It might be frantic at times and could be a bit of a battle.

“But we know what we’re capable of.”

This Saints squad will head for Dens Park in confident mood having, before the international break, secured a top six place.

“It’s huge for the club and for the players,”Gordon said.

“I was delighted for Glenn [Middleton] coming on and getting the goal.

“He has probably not played as much as he would’ve liked but that’s because he has come into a team in such good form.

“Top six was our main goal at the start of the season and we’ve fulfilled it. We’ve got a national trophy and the season isn’t finished yet.

“The belief has been there from the start of the season. We never gave up and knew it would come good.

“The confidence and belief in every player and as a team collectively is huge at the moment. Hopefully that is not going to change.”

Two players returned from international duty this week in midfielders Ali McCann (Northern Ireland) and David Wotherspoon (Canada). It was a proud moment.

Gordon said:“I saw David’s goal and it was the famous chop that all St Johnstone fans have seen so many times.

“I was delighted for him and Ali as well.

“They have been arguably two of our best players this season. I was over the moon for the pair of them.”
