Election vandals are told to ‘respect democratic process’
Opposition political groups in Perthshire have called for an end to“mindless vandalism”of election posters and signs.
This week a sign in a Coupar Angus garden supporting the Perthshire North Conservative candidate was vandalised by an SNP supporter.
The Perthshire North SNP group responded by condemning the act as“wholly unacceptable”and said they too have had signs destroyed or defaced.
On Tuesday (April 27) Scottish Conservative Parliamentary candidate for the Perthshire North Murdo Fraser shared an image of a vandalised sign for his campaign on Twitter.
The Murdo Fraser campaign sign had been defaced with the SNP logo painted over it.
Last week Mr Fraser called the destruction of a Conservative campaign sign put up by a local farmer on his farmland next to the A9 between Perth and Inverness as“wanton mindless vandalism.”
This week he said:“It is very disappointing that yet another of our election posters has been vandalised.”
But the local SNP group has condemned the acts of vandalism and called on everyone to respect democracy.
A spokesperson for Perthshire North SNP said:“We unreservedly condemn any vandalism of election posters.
“This is wholly unacceptable.
“Sadly, some of our signs have also been defaced or destroyed.
“We call on everyone to respect the democratic process and stop this mindless vandalism.”
There are five candidates standing in Perthshire North: Peter Barrett (Liberal Democrats), Murdo Fraser (Conservative and Unionist), Don Marshall (Scottish Family Party), Ryan Smart (Labour) and John Swinney (SNP).
