Blair Atholl past on display
Blair Atholl’s wonderful wee folk museum opens tomorrow, Saturday May 1, for the 2021 season.
The Atholl Country Life Museum gives a unique insight into how the people of Atholl lived before globalisation, plastic and fast road links. Every aspect of life is covered in the museum’s three galleries and trustees and volunteers are proud of a perfect reconstruction of Trinafour post office.
They are hoping to see an increase this year in local people coming to one of the Highland Perthshire’s most popular tourist attractions as people start to explore a bit further after lockdown.
Long-standing trustee and volunteer Libby MacRae explained:“We get wonderful ratings and reviews from visitors on Tripadvisor, Facebook, Lonely Planet, Google and other social media, but we note that very few of our customers are from the local area.
“This is a bit hard to understand as so much of what we have on display in our three galleries and old post office reconstruction shows and tells how people – many of whom will be forebears of locals - lived here, how they earned a living, what they did in their spare time and what implements they used in their work.
“It’s not only highly educational but it’s inherently interesting and pretty much all our visitors remark on how much they enjoyed their visit and how surprised they were at the sheer volume of artefacts in the collection.
“There is plenty parking in the adjacent car park, a picnic area, some fabulous walks of varying lengths amid the most stunning scenery, the watermill and Food in the Park next door, which makes a day out in Blair Atholl a very attractive proposition.”
All are raring to go with COVID protocols in place.
It will be open every afternoon until October 31 from 1pm to 5pm.
