Report shows flood risk to 9000 properties
Councillors will this week be updated on flood risk management (FRM) strategies and plans in Perth and Kinross.
Over 200 properties across the region suffered internal flooding during the overnight thunderstorms on August 11/12 2020.
And a report due to be considered by councillors this week highlights how almost 9000 Perth and Kinross properties are estimated as being at risk of flooding.
A flood management update will be provided to Perth and Kinross Council’s environment and infrastructure committee when it meets virtually on May 19.
This follows a request from the committee on August 19, 2020 - when the region was dealing with the aftermath of the worst flooding since 1993.
PKC’s local flood risk management draft plans are due to be published in June 2021.
The report outlines one in 12 Perth and Kinross homes and one in seven businesses here are at risk of flooding amounting to 8,700 properties.
The report says:“The numbers of properties and businesses at risk will increase in the future due to the impact of climate change.”
Perth and Kinross has 22 hotspot flood risk areas - objective target areas (OTAs) - within potentially vulnerable areas.
These include Perth, Blairgowrie, Kinross, Milnathort, Alyth, Pitlochry and Methven.
Draft versions of flood risk management strategies and local flood risk management plans went out for national public consultation in December 2020.
Key information was due to be added in March but phase two of the consultation has been delayed until June 2021 at the earliest due to a cyber attack on SEPA(Scottish Environment Protection Agency).
The consultation will close three months after phase two begins and can be viewed at https://consultation.sepa.org.uk/
