SCOTTISH CUP WINNERS

-

The full-time whistle sounded. Players crashed to the floor in disbelief.

High up in the Hampden stand, there were tears of joy from chairman Steve Brown and all associated with St Johnstone Football Club.

Manager Callum Davidson punched the air in celebration and would later slide topless across a champagne-soaked dressing room floor.

Yes, you read that right.

Emotional supporters danced and danced and danced back in the proudest city in Scotland. Long into the night it would continue.

Many a glass was being raised and everyone – absolutely everyone – was ordering doubles.

As captain Jason Kerr waded through gleeful team-mates to take centre-stage and lift the 2021 Scottish Cup, it still wasn’t sinking in.

It probably won’t sink in this week, this month or even this year. What is certain is that this team will never be forgotten.

Winning the League Cup and Scottish Cup in the same season was tagged as the impossible dream.

But when it comes to St Johnstone, nothing is impossible.

There was a banner hanging up the back of the East Stand in recent years which adorned the message: “Underestimated Since 1884.”

Nobody will be underestimating this group of players ever again. They are not just local legends. They are legends of Scottish football.

Standing in their way of an unthinkable cup double was Hibernian. A bigger squad, bigger budget, bigger fanbase and the rest of it.

But certainly on Saturday it was the Perth club who had the biggest heart.

The opening minutes were nervy as expected. Substitutes and players not named in the squad were kicking every ball in the stand.
