Driver was injured when train struck collapsed tree
A train travelling between Perth and Dundee crashed into a collapsed tree at over 60mph, a probe has found.
The investigation by Rail Accident Investigation Branch revealed the train was travelling at 63mph and that the train driver was the only person injured.
The collision was so severe the tree “penetrated”the windscreen causing damage to the cab, however, no passengers were harmed.
Following the incident near Glencarse on May 21 the ScotRail train was stopped in Barnhill in Perth for several hours.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said as many as 10 fire appliances and a number of other emergency vehicles rushed to the scene after the train crashed into the tree.
Results of a full investigation will be published by Rail Accident Investigation Branch“in the next few weeks”.
A spokesperson from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch said:“At around 4.47pm on May 21, 2021, a passenger train travelling from Perth to Dundee struck a fallen tree while travelling at about 63mph (101 km/h) near Glencarse.
“The tree penetrated the windscreen causing injuries to the driver and damage to the cab.
“We have undertaken a preliminary examination into the circumstances surrounding this incident.
“Having assessed the evidence which has been gathered to date, we have decided to publish a safety digest.
“The safety digest will be made available on our website in the next few weeks.”
