Luncarty beef up firepower Boss Robbie signs Scott and Dale

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Luncarty have added firepower to their frontline as preparations ramp up for the start of the new season.

Manager Robbie Holden has welcomed last year’s East of Scotland League top scorer Scott Sutherland from Newburgh.

And joining him up top in the forward department is Dale Smart, who most recently spent time with fellow Conference B side Kinnoull.

On welcoming Sutherland to Brownlands Park, Holden said: “Playing against him last year, he was top scorer in the league and had 15 goals when we stopped.

“He is also a player I know from him coming into Jeanfield at a young age. He is a sharp finisher and is nippy around the box.

“We felt like we needed extra firepower from last season. There were a few teams in for him so we were pleased to pull it off.

“We’ve started to build a really strong team and the start we made last year potentially made people stand up and take notice.

“It maybe helps you start to draw other good players and hopefully we can keep on improving.”

And on Smart, Holden said: “Dale has been at Letham and was in good form with Kinnoull, scoring a lot of goals over a couple of seasons.

“He is a different player, has a bit more height and is a bit more back to goal than Scott. But he certainly knows where the goal is. They are two good additions for the club and in training we’ll get the two of them knowing each other’s game.

“Fraser Mills has moved on. He’s got a second baby and has started working for himself now, so he is really busy.

“We’re obviously disappointed to lose him but we’ve brought in two strikers so hopefully we are covered in that area.

“The rest of the squad is all signed up now.”

The East of Scotland League season is set to begin on July 17.

“We’ve had the first couple of cup draws which is exciting and it starts to feel a bit more real again,” Holden said.

“We’ve had a couple of sessions back since we started pre-season so we’re starting to get into the swing of things.”

The South Challenge Cup draw was held recently and Luncarty were handed a bye through round one. Awaiting in round two is Glasgow University.

Jeanfield Swifts also went straight into round two and will host Lowland League side BSC Glasgow at the Riverside.

Kinnoull will welcome Lochgelly Albert to Perth for round one and, if victorious, will play Harthill Royal in the second round.

First round ties are scheduled for September 11 with second round fixtures on October 16.

The other draw to take place last week was the King Cup, where Luncarty will host Dunipace in round one. A trip to Rosyth for round two is on the cards if they win. In round two Kinnoull will take on either Preston or Burntisland.
