COPS HOLD 36-year-OLD in LOnDOn
Tributes to‘dearly loved’ grandfather
A 36-year-old man has been arrested in London in connection with the death of Perth grandfather Ian Menzies.
The 55-year-old’s body was first discovered after emergency services were called to a Scott Street property on Monday night, following a report of concerns for a person.
The authorities initially called Mr Menzies’ death “unexplained” with police and forensic officers spotted in the street on Monday night and throughout Tuesday. Following further investigations police launched a full murder inquiry, with the man they sought previously said to be a resident patient at the city’s Murray Royal Hospital.
Floral tributes have been placed at the entrance to the Scott Street property, including a photograph of Mr Menzies with two women.
His heartbroken family issued the following statement: “Ian was the best dad, grandad and brother in the world.
“He was caring, respected and loved dearly by friends and family. Words cannot express how sorely he will be missed.
“As you can understand, this is a traumatic time for us as a family. Although we appreciate your messages of support we would
like to respectfully request our privacy at this highly sensitive time.”
Forensic officers were spotted examining the buzzer entry system to the block of flats on Wednesday afternoon, while a police guard remained in place.
The back of the property, which includes a bin storage area and a car park, was also cordoned off.
One neighbour said they heard a woman “screaming” after Mr Menzies’ body was discovered inside.
They said: “We were watching TV when we heard a woman screaming in the street.
“That’s when we looked out the window and saw all the police. They’ve been there ever since.
“CID officers have been round all our doors asking us if we saw anything.
“That block does have a lot of visitors coming in and out at all hours of the day.”
Following a threeday manhunt, police yesterday announced the arrest of a 36-year-old man in the London area. Detective Inspector Gary Winter of Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team said: “There will be a continued police presence in Perth in the coming days and I would like to thank local residents for your patience meantime.” He added: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of Ian at this extremely difficult time and they are being supported by specialist officers.
“Anyone who believes they may have information relevant to the investigation is asked to email scdholmesdundee@ scotland.pnn.police.uk or telephone using 101 quoting reference number 3859 of June 7, 2021.”
