Art exhibition puts Penelope in the picture

- MELANIE BONN

Frames Gallery has a new exhibition of work opening this weekend by a Tayside Artist.

Penelope Anstice trained at Edinburgh College of Art and works at Meadowmill Studios in Dundee.

In normal times, as well as being a full-time painter she would teach both at home and abroad, offering courses in London and Italy.

But with travel being out of the question over the last year, Penelope has had an opportunity to explore new subjects and new techniques.

And that is why there are some still lifes in this exhibition alongside the landscapes that she is known for.

After living and working in London and Amsterdam for fifteen years, she moved back to Scotland where much of the inspiration for her landscape painting comes from.

Describing how she makes her paintings Penelope said:“Often the work is loosely based on a place or the memory of a place, lying somewhere between landscapes real and imagined.

“It is usually a certain light or mood that draws me in, I might start off with a direct reference but the painting can drift and then it becomes a more instinctive process.”

Penelope works mostly in oils and likes to use a limited palette of colours, creating a subtle yet effective evocation of the light and the landscape.

Penelope’s exhibition opens on Saturday and will run until July 10.

Some of the 30 works hung in her solo show are based on travels before the pandemic like the Moroccan and Indian market scenes, but more often the paintings displayed were produced‘en plein air’and close to home, many inspired by the recent winter snow.
