YOU’RE ALL FAN-TASTIC

Saints’season tickets are selling fast

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Callum Davidson has delivered a massive thank you to St Johnstone fans for snapping up season tickets.

The Perth club this week noted that sales are “flying” as supporters sign up to watch Scottish football’s cup double winners.

Saints, who won the 2021 League Cup and Scottish Cup, have much to look forward to.

There will be a determination to build on their fifth-placed league finish while European football is on the horizon this summer.

Davidson, who pieced together a dream first year as manager, wants as many fans as possible to join the journey at McDiarmid Park.

“I’d like to thank the people who supported us last season and are now showing their support again,” the Saints boss said.

“It was obviously a great season. I’m sure our fans have enjoyed the success and how we’re trying to play football.

“There are big games coming up and it will be great for them to meet these players, especially the younger supporters, and be part of match days in the ground again.

“I think with a lot of clubs you might find that people want to come and watch a game of football who are either new supporters or who hadn’t been for a while before COVID.

“It’s a great afternoon or night at live football – especially in Scotland, where there is never a dull moment.”

Saints’ players have deservedly been enjoying some downtime since their Scottish Cup win but a return to training is not too far off.

Davidson confirmed his squad - without Scott Tanser who has joined St Mirren - will be back in to prepare for season 2021/22 on Monday, June 28.

“I think the biggest motivation for the players in the final was getting themselves an extra 10 days off,” Davidson smiled. “With Hibs, our season went on longer than the other teams so it’s good that we don’t have to come back until the end of the month.

“The break is important. It also means that David Wotherspoon and Ali McCann get a proper break as well, after having more games with Northern Ireland and Canada.

“We’re fortunate that one of the bonuses of winning the Scottish Cup is the return date being pushed back. We’ll use it, recharge, regroup and be ready for pre-season.”

Davidson is licking his lips at the prospect of coming up against one of Europe’s elite in the Europa League third qualifying round.

“When you look at the teams we could draw in Europe there’s so much to look forward to,” he said.

“European nights are special for a club like St Johnstone

“My big hope is that we can get our fans into McDiarmid Park and they can travel to the away ones as well.

“We’ve had great support at different places across Europe in the past.”

There was more good news for Saints this week when skipper Jason Kerr was named in the SPFL Premiership Team of the Season. He has grown into the role of captain superbly well.
