Gregor equals course record at Bruntsfield

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Perthshire golfer Gregor Graham this week equalled the course record at the prestigious Bruntsfield Links.

The 17-year-old carded an eight-under par score of 63 in round one of the Scottish Boys’ Amateur Championship.

Gregor, a Blairgowrie Golf Club member, recorded nine birdies and one bogey en route to his special achievement in Edinburgh.

“I had a really solid start,” Gregor told the PA. “I made three pars despite having good chances.

“I then birdied four before finishing with three birdies in my last four of the front nine. I was really happy standing on the 10th tee.

“I had hit a couple of bad shots but nothing that had harmed me, just easy up and downs. Everything had went to plan.

“Going into the back nine, when the par fives came along on 12 and 13, I had a couple of nice birdies.

“And then I finished with four threes which was nice. I was taking one shot at a time and everything seemed to click really nicely.

“I wasn’t doing anything fancy. It was steady golf and I was hitting a lot of fairways. My wedge play was sharp.”

Gregor was not aware of the course record but he soon found out after holing a four-foot putt on the last for birdie.

“I didn’t know the course record but I got told on the 18th green that I had tied it,” Gregor smiled.

“Then I couldn’t believe that I’d bogeyed the par three (14th). But it’s always a nice feeling equalling a record at another course. I previously tied the course record at Blairgowrie (Rosemount) at a Junior Tour event. I shot the same score of eight-under.

“That’s now two tied records - my next goal has to be to get my own one!”

The Blairgowrie success in round one was mightily impressive with Cormac Sharpe carding a six-under opener.

And Gregor’s younger brother Connor maintained his strong form this season by signing for a solid two-under par score.

Gregor is into his final few weeks of action in Scotland before making the move to Midland College in Texas on a golf scholarship.

“I’m leaving on August 16 after the British Boys,” Gregor confirmed. “I’ve got a busy run with five weeks in a row.

“I think I’ll get a couple days rest over there and will then meet the team to get started.”
