It can often take a few games to get up to speed.

But Perth boss Callum Davidson was thrilled with how his new loan signings and younger players carried themselves on Tuesday.

Man United full-back Reece Devine and Millwall centre-half Hayden Muller both impressed after entering in the second half against Preston North End.

And Cammy Ballantyne – back from a successful loan spell with Montrose – and Jordan Northcott also caught the manager’s eye.

Davidson, who takes his Saints up to Aberdeen for a behind-closed-doors friendly tonight, said: “I thought Reece and Hayden were excellent and Jordan and Cammy came on too.

“They played well in a high quality game. They all knew their jobs.

“Cammy had COVID for the first 10 days of training so it was great to get him on the pitch.

“We always talk about intensity and pressure and there was plenty of it against Preston.”

Davidson added: “Callum Booth came through after having a few niggles.

“Hopefully we will get Charlie Gilmour and Craig Bryson involved in our next game.”

One player who looked particularly sharp on Tuesday was Michael O’Halloran.

He did not take long to show what an asset he will be to St Johnstone this season.

Always renowned for his staggering pace, the 30-yearold has worked hard to add further power and strength to his game.

O’Halloran has, clearly, gained more upper body muscle in the past couple of months and he looked keen to impress from the first whistle.

Davidson hailed not just his latest performance, but also his dedication to training and desire to better himself.

“Michael came out of lockdown last year looking pretty slim,” Davidson said.

“He is one of these people who looks after themselves so well and he slimmed down.

“But we believe he is actually better when he is a little stronger, with a little more muscle up top.

“I thought he was excellent against Preston.”

Ukrainian midfielder Max Kucheriavyi, a late substitute on Tuesday, has joined Brechin City on a season-long loan. He recently penned a three-year deal with Saints.
