Close racing the order of the day

-

The conclusion of Perth Sailing Club’s Dewar Series took place at Lairwell last week with three evenings planned for racing.

On the Wednesday, a light breeze from the west clearly suited James Curley in his Solo who led from the start.

Not too far behind, a close race for second place between the Solo of Andrew Porteous and John Ferguson in a Streaker was under way.

And while the Streaker crossed the finish line ahead, it was not far enough to place second on handicap.

Race two followed a similar pattern with the Solos taking first and second spots.

The wind on Thursday was much lighter but two boats set off on a simple course around two marks and completed it with a struggle. With no further wind, that would be the final race in the series.

Light winds continued over the weekend allowing no racing on Saturday but conditions were slightly better on Sunday. A westerly course was set but, by the time the countdown ran its course, the wind had become lighter.

As the fleet crept around the triangular course, the wind began to pick up and the places changed several times before Bill Inches in a Firefly crossed the finish.

Keen for a second race, it was Porteous who got clear to win.
