Scots call has Zander on a real high
It has been quite the month for the goalkeepers of St Johnstone Football Club.
Ross Sinclair, who hails from Scone, was first selected to represent the national under-21 side.
And this week arrived more positive news – longawaited news – that Zander Clark had finally been recognised by Scotland.
The Perth number one will join up with Steve Clarke’s squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Denmark, Moldova and Austria.
The double selection obviously reflects well on both players but also on Saints’ goalkeeping coach Paul Mathers.
Clark (left) was quick to lavish Mathers with praise following his special call-up.
“I’d like to thank Steve Clarke for my inclusion in the Scotland squad,”the 29-year-old said.“It’s a great honour, and I am very proud.
“I’d also like to say thanks to Callum Davidson and his coaching staff, especially Paul Mathers, our goalkeeping coach.
“Paul has worked very hard with me and has helped to improve my game.
“I’m looking forward to meeting up with the rest of the Scotland squad next week for the vital World Cup qualifiers against Denmark, Moldova and
Austria.”
Saints manager Davidson was understandably very pleased for his towering shot-stopper.
“This is a great honour for him and for everyone at the football club,”Davidson noted.
“I’ve known Zander since he was a youngster at St Johnstone and watched him progress to a very high level.
“He has been in fine form for us in the past number of seasons, and his performances in European football this season have been first class. He has the ability and mentality to handle the big occasion.”
