Several historic buildings across Perth and Kinross will open their doors in person and virtually to the public later this month.

Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust (PKHT) has confirmed it will take part in Doors Open Days 2021 on September 18 and 19.

The event will see owners and operators of historic and new buildings of particular interest across the country opening their doors and welcoming visitors for free.

The Lower City Mills in Perth, the home of PKHT since October 2019, will be made accessible to the public for the first time in many years. Visitors will get the opportunity to see inside the water-powered building, to hear about how central it has been in Perth’s food production for centuries and about the trust’s plans for its future.

Outdoor historical walking tours of the city Lade’s route downstream of Lower City Mills will also run.

Visitors will get the chance to follow the flow of the city’s man-made, now largely underground, canal with esteemed archaeologist David Bowler and hear how the waterways once fed the mills and formed the medieval defences of the burgh of Perth.

Beyond Perth, buildings welcoming visitors will include the very quaint Scotlandwell Wash House – where the laundry facilities of the Victorian age can be seen.

At Comrie Croft, Innerpeffray Library and on a walking tour along the Gask Ridge, the new Roman Strathearn event will allow a glimpse into some of the events that shaped the region’s cultures since Roman times and offer the chance to build a Roman defensive turf wall.

Visitors will also be invited to tour the site of the A9 dualling works from

Luncarty to Pass of Birnam while Cultybraggan POW camp will open the special Hut 61 Museum of military memorabilia, which is rarely seen by the public.

Tibbermore Church, used as the set for the infamous Outlander witch trial, will be open for free over the weekend.

Pre-booking is required for most visits and walks and some online tours with further information on venues, times and digital accessibility available on the national website www. doorsopendays.org.uk

Visit www.pkht.org.uk/dod for information on Perth and Kinross buildings taking part.
