Rotary club’s popular golf day returns

- SPORTS REPORTER

The Rotary Club of Perth’s charity golf day returned to King James VI Golf Club after a two-year gap.

More than 20 teams were taking part at the popular Island course, raising nearly £6500 for local charities in the process.

Joe Cairns, who is the president of the Rotary Club of Perth, thanked the club for generously hosting the event.

He said:“These last 18 months have been difficult for everyone – the COVID pandemic has cost lives, it has devastated many of our local businesses but, in particular, it has hit our local charities and voluntary groups very hard.

“For us at Rotary, we are seeing first hand food poverty, mental health issues, a high suicide rate, loneliness – particularly in the young and sadly we expect these issues to be with us for years to come.

“Never before has the support of local sponsors, businesses and golfers been more important and we thank everyone who made this event a huge success.”

Ewan Bannerman, golf organiser for the Rotary Club of Perth, added:“It was a great day for local golfers and thanks to all of our sponsors and local businesses who entered.

“It was fun, enjoyable and, most importantly, we raised much needed money for local charities.”

And Ray Smethurst of host club King James VI said:“This competition has been going for over 25 years now and over that period has raised some £150,000 for local charities.

“We are proud of our partnership with the Rotary Club of Perth in providing a great course and facilities for this event and look forward to continuing our relationship.”
