Youngsters get into the swing at afternoon of fun on golf course

-

About 20 youngsters came along to the North Inch recently for an afternoon of fun on the golf course.

It was the inaugural event of the recently constituted North Inch Junior Golf Club.

Activity included a nine-hole competition on the newly laid-out blue course, a skills challenge of chipping and putting, and a competition on the six-hole short course.

Golf course officer Niall McGill said:“This is the first of many events for juniors at the North Inch.

“We have constituted the North Inch Junior Golf Club as a golf club in its own right, and will be ready to run events throughout the season next year.

“A new shorter course of 3531 yards has been laid out, playing from blue tees. This is in the process of being rated by Scottish Golf, and will be available for anyone to play, but will be particularly of interest to beginners, both juniors and adults.

“We aim to make the North Inch a userfriendly course to all levels of players.”

To make taking up the game easier for youngsters, the club is about to start up a junior golf club loan scheme.

This will let juniors borrow clubs for a year for only £25. When they need a larger set, they just hand back the ones they have and move up to bigger ones.

Junior convenor Christine Partridge said:“It was great to see so many juniors enjoying themselves. We are looking to grow junior golf at the Inch and see the loan scheme as a great help to enabling youngsters to take up the game.”

The next junior golf afternoon will be held in October and parent representative Craig Martin is already planning this event.

“Following the success of our first golf day, we are looking forward to seeing the youngsters back again next month, with hopefully some new faces as well,”he said.

The event is open to all junior season-ticket holders at the North Inch.

Winners at the inaugural event were: Nine-hole competition - 1 Kieran McKechnie, 2 Brodie Martin. Six-hole competition - 1 Taylor Sin, 2 George Gillies. Skills competition group one - 1 Stephen Rattray, 2 Matthew Kirk. Group two - 1 Aiden Ross, 2 Lily Fraser.
