School’s delight at new award

Staff and pupils at Meigle Primary School are delighted to have achieved their seventh Green Flag Eco Schools award.

Eco Schools is an international award programme that provides guidance to schools on sustainable issues, helping them make sustainability an integral part of school life.

Children and staff at the east Perthshire school have been working hard over the past two years in their bid towards gaining their new green flag award status, which has to be renewed every two years.

Meigle’s new green flag was proudly raised by primary six pupil Emily Murray during a small celebration last week.

The pupils all made green pennants to wave and enjoyed cupcakes and music in the playground.

Head teacher at the school, Rachel Cross, said: “I am delighted that we have achieved our seventh Eco Green Flag.

“I am particularly proud of the efforts made by the Eco Committee, led by class teacher Miss Grant.

“We asked Emily to raise the new Green Flag as she won the Meigle Eco Award last session in recognition of her dedication and commitment to improving our school environment.

“She organised a pupil group to do regular clean-ups of the playground and kept planters and the greenhouse well maintained.

“The Eco Committee planted more plants including donated crocus bulbs.

“Emily even visited the school grounds during the summer holidays too in her own time.”

And teacher Nicole Grant said that she had been amazed by the recent hard work of her Eco Committee especially after such unprecedented times.

She said: “Our Eco Committee takes the lead on environmental issues and decides what action should be taken to care for the school environment.

“The Eco Committee also represents the views of our wider community and produces leaflets and posters, talks at assemblies and campaigns for change and to spread positive messages.

“The pupils did not lose sight of their cause during home learning and returned to the school passionate about spreading eco messages about litter, recycling and maintaining our playground.

“It is great that all of our school committees are supportive of each other’s campaigns and the Eco Committee and Rights Respecting Schools committees work in tandem to promote global citizenship and sustainable goals.”

Explaining why she thought the Eco Committee was such an important cause to support, Emily said: “I went on holiday in the summer and saw lots of deforestation and it really hit home to me how much it is happening everywhere - locally, across Scotland and across the globe.

“We have lots of trees in and around Meigle but can always have more.”
