Digging deep for Her Majesty the Queen

Trees planted to mark Platinum Jubilee

New roots have been put down in Perth and Kinross to help celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

People across the UK are being invited to take part in the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) and “plant a tree for the jubilee” over the next few months to mark Her Majesty’s 70 years of service and improve the environmen­t.

Schools, villages, cities, community groups and businesses are all encouraged to take part in the campaign, which runs from the start of tree planting season in October through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.

The QGC will also dedicate a network of 70 ancient woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 ancient trees to celebrate the occasion.

Lord- Lieutenant for Perth and Kinross Stephen Leckie was one of the first in Scotland to take part in the QGC, planting a prunus at Braidhaugh Park in Crieff last Thursday morning.

The first of 70 trees has also been planted in the grounds of Crieff Hydro.

Mr Leckie said: “The Queen’s Green Canopy is a wonderful initiative that will create a legacy in honour of The Queen that will improve our environmen­t for generation­s to come.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to take part in the Queen’s Green Canopy and help create a greener, more sustainabl­e country for us all.”

Perth and Kinross Provost Dennis Melloy visited Jubilee Park in Alyth to plant a birch on Friday afternoon.

Provost Melloy said: “The Queen’s Green Canopy is a fantastic way to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne and to make a real and lasting difference to our country.

“I am delighted to be one of the first to plant a tree as part of the historic Platinum Jubilee celebratio­ns.”

The Enchanted Forest, Perthshire’s famed sound and light show, also contribute­d to the monarchy milestone.

A tree has been gifted to the event by Forestry and Land Scotland, and was planted at Faskally Wood in Pitlochry, where the event is held annually.

Deputy lieutenant of Perth and Kinross Alex Cairncross met with chair of The Enchanted nted Forest Community Trust Lesley Williamson mson at Faskally Wood on Friday to mark the official fficial QGC launch.

Lesley said: “We are absolutely delighted ed to be marking this auspicious occasion for Her Majesty with the planting of a beautiful red d oak tree in Faskally Wood, home of The Enchanted nted Forest.

“This is a tree that will be enjoyed for generation­s to come and, we hope, many any thousands of visitors who attend the event vent every year.”

The Woodland Trust is providing g three million trees to schools, youth organisati­ons and communitie­s in the UK to take part in the Queen’s Green Canopy.
