Chinese New Year do set to go ahead next year with thousands in attendance
Preparations are under way in
Perth for one of the biggest public Chinese New Year celebrations in Scotland.
The news comes in the wake of Perth and Kinross Council cancelling its November fireworks and Christmas lights events due to the pandemic.
The Perth Chinese Association will meet with Perth and Kinross Council to discuss how it can proceed with its January plans in a COVID safe way.
Organisers hope to attract around 5000 people at the two-day event on January 29 and January 30, 2022.
A civic reception is planned along with a fireworks display and a procession of Chinese lion and dragon dancers in Perth city centre.
Invitations will be extended to dignitaries from PKC, politicians and Chinese communities from all over Scotland.
Perth Chinese Association chairman Andy Chan told the PA:“We are working closely with Perth and Kinross Council.
“More details will be announced in the near future.”
Mr Chan said vaccine passports could well be required and they would be led by COVID guidelines. Under the terms of the new scheme vaccine passports are required for any unseated outdoor events with over 4000 people in attendance.
He said:“We are being adaptable within the current guidelines. We will be led by health and safety guidelines and restrictions.”
Perth Common Good Fund Committee was this week asked to make a contribution towards the celebrations. The total costs are projected as £10,500 for firecrackers, decorations, stall/entertainment, Chinese dragon dancers and security.
Councillors at Monday’s (October 4) meeting unanimously agreed to make a contribution of £4200.
