A9 closure misery for motorists in Perth
Motorists in Perth face traffic chaos this weekend when a section of the A9 closes.
BEAR Scotland has said it is carrying out £420,000 resurfacing work on the dual carriageway on the southbound section approaching the Broxden Roundabout.
The road will be closed between the McDiarmid Park junction off slip and Broxden while the work takes place between 7.30pm on Friday, October 8 - the day local schools break for the October holiday - and 6.30am on Monday, October 11.
Instead, drivers travelling south will be diverted through Perth along the A85 Crieff Road/Dunkeld Road, Caledonia Road and the A93 Glasgow Road. The northbound carriageway will remain open.
BEAR Scotland says the project, which was initially scheduled to take place earlier this year, will “address defects in the road surface”.
Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s north east unit representative, said: “We’re pleased to see this project get underway after being postponed earlier this year. The £420,000 investment from Transport Scotland will greatly improve and strengthen this section of the A9 southbound in Perth.
“The planned closure of the southbound carriageway is essential for ensuring the safety of our workforce and motorists, however, our teams will do all they can to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible. Where possible, the works have been programmed consecutively to reduce the duration of the scheme to help minimise any disruption to road users.
“We thank motorists for their patience in advance while our teams carry out these essential improvements on the A9.”
The work will start as five nights of routine maintenance and bridge inspections on the M90 near Perth draw to a close.
The project is allowing teams to carry out cyclic maintenance and inspections work on the bridges and slip roads off the busy M90 Craigend Interchange and Friarton Bridge, ensuring they are continuing to operate safely.
The works will include cleaning the bridge deck joints, channels and verges, as well as drainage clearance, hedge maintenance and general inspections of the bridges on the interchange.
The overnight project began yesterday (October 4) and will take place between 7.30pm to 6.30am across five nights with all works expected to be completed by 6.30am on Saturday, October 9.
A series of overnight closures will be in place on the slip-roads at Craigend Interchange throughout the project as teams will be working on the carriageway.
There will also be alternating lane closures on the A85 below Friarton Bridge.
Diversion routes will be in place when required and signs will be erected in advance to notify motorists.
No works will be carried out during the daytime and all traffic management will be removed.
Today (October 5) will see a double fast lane closure on Friarton Bridge and on Wednesday work will take place on the M90 Broxden Roundabout to Dundee slip road, with a lane closure in place on northbound Friarton Bridge and alternating lane closures on A85 below Friarton Bridge.
Thursday will see a lane closure in place on southbound Friarton Bridge as well as the M90 Dundee to Broxden Roundabout slip road, with alternating lane closures on the A85 below Friarton Bridge.
Friday will see the M90 Edinburgh to Perth (A912) slip road and the M90 Perth to Bridge of Earn (A912) slip road closed.
No more than two slips will be closed on any one night.
