Over 400 join Mark to take part in sportive

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

Over 400 cyclists took part in a sportive organised by a Perth Rotary Club.

Riders had a choice of the long 81- mile course of the ‘wee shorty’ of 46 miles through Highland Perthshire in the event which was organised by the Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull.

Among those who started off from Pitcairngreen on September 25 was event ambassador and round the world cyclist Mark Beaumont.

He said: “This is the most beautiful and friendliest sportive in the Scottish cycling calendar and I am so looking forward to taking part once again.”

The fun ride raised £16,000 to be shared between the Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull and its partner Malawi Fruits.

Since 2015 this joint venture has raised £ 65,000 for much needed local and international charities.

It proved to be a hit with participants.

One said it was a “great event,” adding the Rotary Club “has it nailed for running a great sportive”.

Another said: “Having been involved with the Etape Loch Ness for the last couple of years, I can truthfully say what a well run event we experienced today.

“From all aspects, in particular the marshalls on course and Rotary Club members, what a relaxed and friendly event it was. Many thanks for a great experience, good company and an introduction to some spectacular countryside. Looking forward to our next sportive. “

And another said: “I’d like to thank everyone involved with the sportive yesterday – I really enjoyed it; the course was fantastic, the marshalls had a smile and encouragement as well as directions while the feeding stations had seriously tasty food and the friendliest, most welcoming and helpful staff.”
