Broken glass alert as dog’s paw ‘slashed’

Deliberate dumping fears

A Perth pet owner has warned families to stay away from a section of the River Tay after part of his dog’s paw was left “almost hanging off” after being slashed by broken glass.

And fears have emerged that the smashed bottles may have been placed at the location on purpose.

The incident took place when James Moss ( 44) was out on a walk with his Staffordsh­ire Terrier Archie, along the path between the river and North Inch.

James and his six-year-old pooch made their way to the concrete viewing platform closest to the golf course, which faces a sandy shore on the shallow river bank.

As Archie enjoyed paddling in the shallow water, James was suddenly alerted to a high-pitched whimper and rushed over.

“We headed down to the water where I sometimes take the dog swimming,” he said.

“I throw balls into the water for him to got and fetch.

“He was playing around and he jumped in - and then I heard him yelp.

“There was a piece of glass that had caused a deep gash in his paw and he was bleeding.

“It slashed through one of his claws and it looked like it was almost hanging off.

“I then noticed that there was a few smashed glass bottles in the water but they looked like they were placed there, the sharp side facing up.”

“Archie was miserable after it and he whined.”

James rushed Archie to a nearby vet who swiftly attended to him.

“They had to knock him out with full anaestheti­c it was so bad,” he said. “Then they fixed him up and gave him some stitches.

“His stitches have dissolved now but he still limps a bit and can’t run for long before it gets sore.

“Archie has been on the lead since it happened and he has been on painkiller­s to help.”

James contacted Perth and Kinross Council, asking them to clear the glass fearing it could endanger pets and
