PERTH HILLWALKING CLUB

On Sunday, October 3, the forecast for the Bridge of Orchy hills where our Challenging Group walks were planned, showed ‘strong winds up to 40mph with heavy rain all day and a risk of some thunder later’.

We decided to go further east to Glendoll, where the forecast was for strong winds and showers early and an improving afternoon. We were all dropped off at the Old Quarry near the Glendoll car park and the Challenging Group did a circuit of Cairn Bannoch and Broad Cairn.

The Less Challenging Group did Mayar and Driesh and had intended continuing the traverse back to Clova Hotel, but strong winds and showers made for a return to Glendoll. Thankfully the early showers and strong winds eased as we went into the afternoon and we had some clear intervals. Everyone agreed that the walks would have been much less pleasant had we gone to Bridge of Orchy as planned.

The Moderate Groups travelled to Ballater where the weather was dry all day, as forecast, but with a cool wind on higher parts of the route. All walkers had decent views to distant hills, including Mount Keen, Ben Avon and Lochnagar. The walks were on varied terrain and made for pleasant walking enjoyed by all.

On November 7, the club is running two coaches. Coach A ( Challenging Group) will leave Broxden at 7am for the Loch Laggan area. Coach B (Moderate Group) will leave Broxden at 8am and head to Glenisla. Guests are most welcome to try out a walk; please contact Pete Lodge, membership secretary via our website www.perthhillwalkingclub. co.uk

for the night Linda Retson. The speakers were Mary Birch of Blair in Bloom and Ian Richards of BRAN. Mary gave a presentation about the Mount Ericht Community Garden bought by Blairgowrie and Rattray Development Trust with lifetime tenure.

An 1867 map revealed the land had been used as a kitchen garden. It was completely overgrown and when it was cleared two buildings and a cobbled courtyard were discovered. It is hoped in the future they can be restored and used, one as a kitchen and the other as a workshop or artist’s studio. The final discovery was an apple tree which was a specimen of an old variety called Cat’s Head.

Ian Richards gave a talk about BRAN. The group was formed in 2014 after growing criticism of footpath maintenance due to decreasing council budgets. They took over the care of core paths such as the Ardblair Trail with the cooperation of landowners and tenants. Their work includes grass cutting, strimming, litter picking, rebuilding paths and drains, repairing bridges and steps.

The vote of thanks was given by Pat Hatch, who thanked the speakers for their fascinating and most interesting presentations. Afterwards members enjoyed tea and a chat followed by the raffle. Linda reminded members that the next meeting is on Monday, November 15. The speaker will be a representative from Ardblair Medical Practice.
