Last four defeat for Luncarty

-

Luncarty were agonisingly edged out of making the final of the Alex Jack Cup.

The Bleachers lost out 2-1 against Leith Athletic in the last four of the competition on Saturday afternoon.

Held at Brownlands Park, the Edinburgh visitors, who play in the East of Scotland League’s Conference A, took the lead in the 55th minute.

But Luncarty quickly showed their resilience and Keith Dewar smashed into the net to set up an exciting finish to the game.

It looked to be heading for extra-time but Leith striker Kayne Paterson raced through to grab the winner with just five minutes left.

Bleachers boss Robbie Holden felt that his side paid the price for not making the most of chances earlier in the match.

“I thought we performed very well,”he told the PA.

“But at half-time we were disappointed we hadn’t scored four goals, having hit the bar, the post, one off the line and a great save from their keeper. I don’t think we deserved to go behind but it was fairly stretched and end-to-end in the second half.

“We got the goal back but then lost one which was disappointing for us, with one ball over the top which their striker finished well. I don’t think we deserved to lose the game but taking chances when we are on top has been an issue all season.

“We threw everything at it to get the equaliser and had four up front, but credit to Leith as they threw bodies on the line to make blocks and defended the lead very well.

“We had chances but it’s the way it’s gone for us of late that we haven’t had the ruthless streak.”

Fellow East of Scotland League Conference B side Kinnoull were also in cup action at the weekend.

Alan Cameron’s team welcomed Coldstream to Tulloch Park in the second round of the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup.

And it proved to be a successful afternoon for the Perth men who advanced thanks to a well-earned 2-0 victory with goals coming from Kyle McDonald and Troy Smith.

“With a depleted team we battled very well on Saturday and, after a shaky start, managed to get a foothold in the game,”said pleased Kinnoull manager Cameron.

“In a game of few chances we capitalised on a couple of enforced errors and, in the end, the result probably flattered Coldstream.

“Kyle McDonald was making his debut and turned fantastically to clip the ball home and Troy Smith opened his account with a clinical finish from a tight angle after rounding the goalkeeper.”
