Wildfire risk message issued
Perth and Kinross Council has highlighted the “especially high risk” of wildfires at present and urged local residents to be mindful.
A wildfire warning that has been in place since Friday, May 26 has been extended across many parts of Scotland until Monday.
The warning, which has been graded as ‘very high’ as the warm weather forecast continues, covers the majority of East, Central and Southern Scotland.
Firefighters are appealing to people to take great care when outdoors during the wildfire warning period.
They say it is “crucial” that people act safely and responsibly in rural environments and follow the countryside code.
A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council said: “Just a rogue campfire ember or dropped cigarette can easily develop into a wildfire particularly when the weather is hot and dry as it is just now.
“The vast majority of wildfires in Scotland are a result of incidents like these.
“So if you’re out enjoying nature, for example when camping, please be mindful, and always follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
“There is an especially high risk currently and over the coming weekend when the dry conditions, moderate wind and high temperatures are perfectly suited for an increased risk of unintended fires.
“If you see a wildfire, immediately call 999 and ask for the fire service.”
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service group commander Niall Maclennan said: “A mixture of seasonal weather conditions combined with very dry and dead vegetation means there is a heightened risk of fires, which can be started by the careless disposal of cigarettes as well as barbecues or campfires left unattended.
“Many of our rural and remote communities are hugely impacted by these incidents, which can cause significant environmental and economic damage.”
