What are my chances?
Q I’m nearly 40 and worried about my chances of getting pregnant. Should I see my doctor before we start trying? Steph, Suffolk A
By the time you reach your 40s, the quality and quantity of your eggs will have diminished. Once a woman surpasses her mid-40s, it is common for her menstrual cycle to become less regular – which makes the pregnancy process a lot more challenging, and the chances of falling pregnant much lower. To best increase your chances, it would be beneficial to speak to a doctor about the things you could do to increase your likelihood of conception. For those who do struggle, there’s never been a better time to try and conceive, given the vast range of fertility options available.
