Pick Me Up!

Health & Happiness: Thanks To A Haircut… + Rocco The Rock

…Sam spotted her condition before it was too late

- Sam Heathcock, 37, Stourbridge

Just an ordinary trip to the salon... I was chatting with Stacey, my hairdresser, on 23 June 2012, when I noticed something strange after she clipped my hair back so it covered my left eye.

Only able to see out of my right eye, my vision was blurry, and I could see a black shadow through my line of sight.

I’ve worn glasses since I was 18, and recently my sight had been getting blurrier, but I’d never seen this shadow before.

Hours before my hair appointment, I’d been to the optician’s – but he didn’t find anything, apart from floaters. He told me to come back straight away if it got worse.

After my trim I raced back to the optician, who referred me to Birmingham

Eye Hospital.

There, a specialist diagnosed me with retinal detachment.

He explained there were tiny holes in both of my eyes. The retina at the back of my right one was coming away. Worse, if left untreated, it could eventually leave me blind.

It’d been found – but

I was worried.

My husband

Neil, 39, and I wanted to start a family... How would I keep up with a child if I couldn’t see?

Treatment meant the retina in my right eye had to be reattached, and I’d also need laser surgery, too.

I returned for the op in July 2012 – and it was a success.

My vision remained blurry while my eyes healed. I had to wear an eye patch for a month.

But, after four months, my sight returned to normal.

Better still, Neil and I now have a 2-year-old boy, Elliott.

I’m grateful my problem was picked up before it got worse.

If I hadn’t gone to the hairdresser that day, I might not have realised...

I went in for a trim, but left with my future in sight.

If left untreated, it could eventually leave me blind
