On­dine was a nymph, a wa­ter god­dess in a French folk tale. Her hus­band Pale­mon had pledged to spend his ev­ery wak­ing breath with her. When he com­mit­ted adul­tery, she placed a curse on him, which meant he couldn’t breathe if he ever fell asleep.
