Long-term effects
QI have sun spots on my face and hands - does that mean my skin is more likely to wrinkle as I age? Rachel, Suffolk
AVery likely. This is because the sunspots you have are a sign of unprotected sun exposure.
The fact that you have sunspots means that the sun’s UV light has damaged your skin and stimulated your melanocytes (the pigment producing cells).
Other effects of the UV light is the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles due to decreasing collagen and the elastin in the skin.
So, if you continue this unprotected sun exposure your sun spots are likely to be followed by wrinkles.
My advice would be to wear at least a factor 30 all year round, and make sure you moisturise your hands before you go to bed to avoid any further damage.
